Kate McLendon is a graduate student at USF's Department of Integrative Biology.
She spoke about Mangroves and the research she has been doing regarding the importance of them to Florida's ecosystem. Their dense roots help bind and build soils. Their above-ground roots slow down water flows and encourage sediment deposits that reduce coastal erosion.

Florida's estimated 600,000 acres of mangrove forests contribute to the overall health of the state's southern coastal zone and beyond. This ecosystem traps and cycles various organic materials, chemical elements and important nutrients.
